Nepal, situated in the Himalayas, surrounded by giant countries China and India, is home to the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest as well as a whopping 27 million people. Gurkhas, soldiers from Nepal, served with the British Army. It is estimated that over 150,000 Nepalese people are currently living in the UK.
Nepal always had close tie with Britain. The first person to travel to Britain was Maharaja Junga Bahadur Rana, who first travelled to the UK in April 1850. He was a ruler of Nepal and founder of the Rana dynasty of Nepal.His visit to Britain indeed increase goodwill between the two countries.
The current generation of Nepalese people living in Charlton and neighbouring area can be traced back to 1970's. First Nepalese person who started living in Charlton was Bhim Lal Gautam (Thuldai), originally from Gulmi, Nepal. Since then the area has attracted many diverse people from different part of Nepal. When new immigration rules were unveiled on 24 April 2009, a large number of Ex-British Gurkhas and their family immigrated to the UK. Many of them chose to live in Plumstead and Charlton due to their family connections.
Apart from Ex-British Gurkhas, there are good number of Nepalese people live in Charlton.
